Off Season Snowboard Training – Gear & Tricks
Tips for off season snowboard training, and the equipment that can help you train for boxes and rails. Off season snowboard training is a great way to keep yourself thinking about snowboarding and to continue to improve your skills for tricks all year round.
A great tool for off season snowboard training for boxes and rails is a half foam roller. I got this one at a fitness store for $25 and it’s been a lot of fun to training with. It’s about 3 inches thick, so its high enough to get my board completely off the ground. It’s made of fairly dense foam, so it won’t get damaged when my boards lands on it. Plus because it’s foam there’s a bit of give to it, so my boards doesn’t getting damaged either.
I’m also training outside at the beach so I’ve also got two yoga mats to protect my board from the ground.
There are three skills you can greatly improve by training on the foam roller. The first is your balance. You can learn how to commit and center your weight over the foam, without the fear of sliding out onto your butt. The second is you can learn the movements for different tricks. You can experiment with new tricks, and commit yourself to trying the movements even though you may not be ready to do in the park yet. The third skill you can improve is your strength and fitness. Snowboard training on the foam roller will challenge your fitness and the repetition can improve the strength that’s needed for certain tricks. I’ve notice that each time I’ve practice on the roller my balance and strength are improving and I’m really getting comfortable with the movements of new tricks like the back lipslide.
So, if you want to do off season snowboard training and improve your skills for boxes and rails, I recommend picking up a half foam roller. Then find a good open area and work on the tricks you want try the next time you ride. 10 Snowboard Grabs – Snowboarding Trick List
10 Snowboard grabs you can start adding to your snowboard trick list. I’ll go around the snowboard breaking down all the basic snowboard grabs and a few more technical ones too.
Lets start with the tail grab. This is where you reach your back hand to grab the tail of your snowboard. To add style to the snowboard grab and to make it easier, tilt your board by straightening your front leg as you bend your back.
Next go for the Indy by grabbing your toe edge with your back hand, between your bindings. The Indy is a good beginner snowboard grab because you can do it off small jumps.
Similar to the Indy is the Mute grab, with the difference being you’re grabbing your toe edge with your front hand. Add some style to the Mute by straightening out your back leg to poke out your tail.
Combine the Indy and Mute together to go for a Gorilla Grab. This grab isn’t very common, but it’s a lot of fun, especially if you straight both legs and make it into a stiffy.
Next go for the Nose grab. This is where your front hand grabs the nose of your board. By bending your front leg and extending your back you’ll tilt your board and make this snowboard grab easier with more style.
Once you get comfortable with the nose grab, bring your back hand to your nose and get the Rocket grab. The key for Rocket grabs is flexibility so do some stretching to help pull it off.
Next take your front hand and grab your heel edge between your binding for the Melon grab. Ad some style to the melon by straightening out your front leg to poke out the nose of your board.
Build on the Melon by going for a Method grab. The difference is in the method grab you twist your board around in front of you and stretch your back foot away from your back hand.
Another basic snowboard grab and one I like to do on hips is the Stalefish. For this grab you back hand grabs your heel edge between your bindings.
Finally ad some creativity to your grabs by doing a double nose / tail grab. This grabs easier to do when you’re comfortable on big jumps, where you have lots of air time to get both grabs in.

How to 50-50 a Box | Snowboard Tutorial Video
50-50 is a great beginner trick and will get you started hitting boxes in the terrain park. I break down the 50-50 into three parts, the approach, on the box, and landing. I’ll also show you the progression so you can learn this trick quickly and safely.
You want to approach the box with the right amount of speed and in a straight line with your snowboard flat. To control your speed do a few speed checks on your way to the box. 50-50 is easier with a bit of speed which will help you slide all the way to the end. Plan on doing one or two speed checks, and then leave yourself enough space to point your snowboard straight and flat. You want to have your snowboard pointed straight and flat a good distance before the box so that you’re not trying to adjust your board that the last second.
On the box you want to keep your snowboard flat, and pointed straight. To keep your board flat make sure your knees are bent and your back is straight. This will keep your weight in the center of your snowboard. To keep your snowboard going straight make sure your back hand is over your tail and front hand is over your nose, with your head looking forward. If your shoulders are facing forward on the box, then your snowboard will try and turn sideways to match your shoulder. This is why it’s important to have your hand over your snowboard to stay straight.
For the landing you want come off the box smooth and in control. Let your snowboard smoothly slide off the box and absorb the landing by bending your knees. Once you land get ready to do a heel turn to control your speed and ride away clean. I prefer to do a heel turn after the landing, this way you can easily see any obstacles that may be in your way.
To learn the 50-50 safely, you want to first practicing them on the snow outside the park. You should be super confident doing speed checks on the snow, and riding with your snowboard straight, flat and with some speed. You always want to master the skills of a trick outside the park on the snow, before bringing it to a feature in terrain park.

10 Snowboard Tricks to Learn Next – Tutorial Video
10 snowboard tricks to learn next on your snowboard. These snowboard tricks are in order and each one will teach you a skills you can use in the next trick on the list. Remember to learn at your own pace and practice in a safe area.
The first snowboard trick on the list is tripods. Tripods are a fun butter trick and will challenge you to take your weight past your tail. Get used to the tripod by first doing them on the spot where you plant your hands in the snow and practice balancing your body. When you’re ready for the run, I find that its easier to do the tripod on a steeper slope.
Next, take your ollie skills and reverse them to get the nollie. Nollies are sometimes forgotten, but if you can add them to your trick list they can add a lot of style to your riding. The key for a good nollie is moving your weight to the nose of your boards and extending off your front foot.
In the last list we learned front 3’s, and now its time for the back 3! Back 3’s outside the park are a safe way to get used to spinning. It’s also gives you the time to perfect your line in, wind up, and pop which are the three skills needed to get the back 3 around.
Continue to improve your spinning skills by spinning butters. Butters are fun because you can do them at anytime and without a terrain park. Butters will teach your how to create spin, and how to hold a press.
Next head into the park for Back Shifty’s. You can first practice your back shifty on the snow, then take the movement into the air. Twisting in the air with your back foot across and your back hand countering. Mastering the Back shifty will help you with next trick on the list, Method grabs.
The method is a classic snowboard grab and one that you can add a lot of style to. The breakdown of the method grab is to simply grab your heel edge with your front hand, either between your bindings or infront of your binding. At the same time twisting in the air to bring your board around in front of you.
Another snowboard trick that you’ll need your back shifty skills for is the front boardslide. This is stylish trick that you can start practicing on easy boxes. Take your time progressing the boardslide, first getting onto the box 5050 and twisting out the boardslide more each time.
Now it time for the first spin to learn on a jump, the frontside 180. The front 1 is great spin to start with because you can see the takeoff and landing the entire time. Use the same skill you gained doing 180’s outside the park to breakdown the trick and land it successfully.
At the same time as learning the frontside 180 you can start practicing the backside 180. It’s a slightly more difficult spin because the landing is blind, but it can also be a bit easier because your taking off from your toe edge. Switch riding is really key for 180 tricks, so you have the confidence to commit to the switch landing.
Combine your front and back 180 skills together for doing 180’s on and off a box. For this trick you do a different style of 180, where you use a twisting motion to get the 180 around clean and quick. Practice your twisting 180 motion outside the park first so you have the muscle memory for when it’s time to hit the box.

How To Backside Boardslide to Fakie – Snowboarding Tricks
Learn how to backside boardslide to fakie. This is one of the first trick you can try on a box. To help you guy, I’m going to show you the three skills you need to learn before trying this trick. I’ll also break it down and give you the key for landing this your first try.
So there are three skills you need to learn for this tricks. The first skill is switch riding and it a must for having the confidence to commit to the switch landing. The second key is to practice the boarslide movement as you ride. This is a safe way to practice, and build your muscle memory. The third skill is to have frontside 180’s mastered. This is basically the same trick as the back boardslide, but your rotating in the air, instead of on a box.
Know lets break down the boardslide. For the approach do a one or two turns to set your speed, and arrive at the box doing a mellow heel turn, slightly on your heel edge. From your heels you can do a small hop onto the box and continue the boardslide in the same direction as the heel turn.
To get the boardslide around you want to take your back shoulder, and turn it around until it becomes your new front shoulder. Keep your core stiff as you turn so your legs and board follow.
The key to success on your first attempt is to land with your board flat and be balanced over your board. With your knees bent, butt out, back arched slightly, and shoulder and hands over your toe edge. You can practice this on the snow or at home and get used to the feeling of landing with your board flat and weight balanced. You can even see what if feel like to land unbalanced and heavy on your heels.
So, have fun learning back boardslides to switch out. Remember to first master the three skills. Then break the boardslide down to be successful on your first attempt. How to 180 On & Off a Box Snowboarding – Tutorial Video
Learn how to 180 on and off a box. This is a fun intermediate trick, which combines a lot of different 180 skills. To help make learning this trick easy I’m going to break down into three parts, teach you the 180 skills needed to complete each part and how you can prepare for this trick outside the park.
The first part of this trick is the twisting 180 On. As you approach the box you need get ready to do a quick 180 on from your heel edge. For the twisting 180 first turn your upper body forward, then twist you lower body and snowboard around. This twisting motion will get your board on 180 quickly and stop your snowboard from rotating too much. You can practice this twisting motion outside the park first on an easy flat slope.
The second part of this trick is landing your spin on the box switch, with your snowboard flat. You need to be confident landing on the box switch so you can commit to the 180 on. You also need to be in control sliding switch so you can set up the 180 off. Practice switch 5050’s on the box first to get comfortable sliding switch. You can also practice your switch landings outside the park, working on landing with your snowboard fairy flat.
The third part of this trick is doing a switch 180 off without using your edges. Because you’re sliding across hard plastic you cant use your edge to help you 180. You can twist off with your snowboard flat or you can nollie 180 off which gives you more time in the air before the landing. Use the twisting motion, so you can quickly get the spin around and stop the rotation for the landing. As you get to the end of the box turn your upper body backwards, then twist your lower body and snowboard 180. You can also practice this switch nollie 180 outside the park.
Take the time to master all your 180 skills on an easy slope, before you bring them together on a small box in the park. Once your comfortable with 180’s on and off boxes you can start working your way up towards 180’s on and off more difficult features like down boxes and rails.

How to Butter 180 Snowboarding – Tutorial Video
Learn how to do butter 180 snowboarding. A butter 180 is a really fun ground trick, that you can practice all over the mountain, without a terrain park. The butter 180 combines a lot of different snowboard skills that you can get creative with and add style to.
I’m going to break this trick down into two parts, the press and the 180. I’ll also show you the progression of this trick, so you practice on the flat ground, mellow slopes and off lips.
The first part of this trick is getting into the press. The key to a good press is being able to move your weight around over your snowboard. For the tail press bend your back leg and move your weight over your tail. A trick to help you get into the press is to reach your back hand down towards the snow and feel the weight of the press evenly on the side of your foot. Having a soft snowboard or a reverse camber board will make pressing much easier.
The next part of this trick is the 180. Start by turning your upper body to face the direction you want to 180 in. With your upper body turned you can now twist your legs and snowboard. This turn and twist motion will get your snowboard around quickly and stop you from spinning past 180. It’s important to turn and face your upper body a full 90 degrees to be able to twist your snowboard a full 180 degrees. To get the 180 into the air do a small ollie out of the tail press. You can continue the butter 180 by landing in a press, turning your upper body and twisting another 180.
If you’re new to pressing your snowboard you can start by practicing on the flat ground. Once you’re comfortable pressing, you can add in the 180. Take this to the next level by practicing nose and tail presses on a mellow slope. You can also twist your board 180 as you ride to get used to the twisting motion. Once you have butter 180’s on a mellow slope dialed, you can find a small lip or roller to butter 180 off.

How to Backside Shifty Snowboarding – Tutorial Video
Learn how to do a backside shifty snowboarding. A back shifty is when you twist your body in the air, so your snowboard is facing backwards. This is a stylish and fun trick you can practice on the ground and as you ride before taking it to a jump.
To start you can get comfortable with the backside shifty snowboarding motion, by practicing on the flat ground. From your normal snowboard stance hop and twist your body. Focus on reaching your back foot and back hand in opposite directions. Then come out of the shifty by untwisting back to your normal snowboard stance.
Once you’re comfortable on the flat ground your can start practicing back shifty’s as you ride. Slide your back foot out as reach you back hand the opposite direction. More weight on your front foot will make sliding your back foot out much easier. Doing shifty’s as you ride will build muscle memory, so you know exactly how the shifty should feel when you’re in the air.
When you’re ready to back shifty in the air, find a small jump to practice on. For the take off focus on getting a solid pop off the jump, so you’re in control and balanced. In the air do the shifty by pushing your back foot out and reaching your back hand the opposite way. By countering your back foot with your back hand, you can get your snowboard completely sideways. For the landing, simply untwist your body and get ready to bend your knees.

How to Penguin Walk Snowboarding – Beginner Snowboard
In this video I’m going to teach you how to do the penguin walk. This is a great beginner snowboard skill which allows you to get across flat parts of the mountain, without having to unstrap from you snowboard. To make learning the penguin easy, I’ll show you a few skills to practice first, break down each part of the penguin walk and show you how to avoid common mistakes.
The first skill to practice is nose and tail presses. You use this same motion in the penguin walk, moving your weight between your front and back foot with each step. For the tail press move your weight over your tail and bend your back leg. Do the same for the nose press, moving your weight over your nose while bending your front leg.
Once you’re comfortable pressing on both feet, you can start bouncing between your nose and tail. Alternating your weight and use your knees to bend into the tail press and pop out into the nose press.
The next step to start using your toe edge to move forward. Each time you move your weight between your nose and tail, dig your toe edge in and push yourself forward. Focus on one foot at a time, until you can get a rhythm going.
Keep your weight center over you snowboard, to stay balanced, and keep yourself from falling forward. Use your arm to keep your momentum going and to help keep you balanced.
